How to Get Ladder: Technology Level 10 and Materials
The Ladder unlocks at Technology Level 10 for a single Technology Point and builds from 10 Wood. Here is how to reach it, where to farm the Wood, which Lumbering Pals cut it fastest, and when a Ladder is the wrong call versus Wooden Stairs.

The Ladder is the climbable wooden rung piece in the Foundations tab, and it costs one Technology Point at Technology Level 10 plus 10 Wood to place. This guide covers the exact unlock, the seven other nodes competing for your points at that level, where to farm the Wood, the Pals that chop it fastest, and the honest comparison against Wooden Stairs — because the Ladder costs five times as much and is still the right pick in some spots.
Ladder Stats and Unlock
Two things in the card below are worth pausing on. The Ladder is the only Foundations piece in the entire game that sits at Technology 10 — every other one of the 132 Foundation structures arrives bundled in a material set at Technology 2, 19, 30, 45, 49, 62 or 67. It has no upgraded version either: there is no Stone Ladder, no Metal Ladder, no Ancient Ladder. What you unlock here is what you use for the rest of the run. The second thing is the price. At 10 Wood it is the most expensive Foundation piece you can build before Technology 19, five times the cost of a Wooden Stairs, and every other early Foundation piece runs 2-3 Wood.
| Ladder | |
|---|---|
| Category | Foundations — same tab as walls, floors and stairs |
| Build cost | 10× |
| Technology level | 10 |
| Technology Points | 1 — a standard point, no Ancient Point needed |
| Upgraded versions | None — it is the only Foundation piece with no material tiers |
| Raw material value | 120 gold |
| Cheaper alternative | |
| In-game blurb | "A ladder that allows you to climb to a slightly higher place." |
There is no schematic to hunt and no drop to farm — this is a plain research node, so the only gate is your player level and one spare point. Once it is researched it is permanent and appears in the Foundations tab of your build menu forever. The rest of what you can put down is on the full Palworld structures list with materials.
How to Unlock the Ladder at Technology Level 10
Hit player level 10, open the technology tree, and spend one point. That is the whole process — but level 10 is one of the more crowded rows on the board, and the point you spend here is a point you do not spend on the Primitive Furnace, which is the node that gates every ingot you will ever smelt. Research the furnace first, the Nail second, and the Ladder whenever you actually have a base tall enough to need one. Clearing every non-Ancient node at Technology 10 or below runs to 92 Technology Points across 64 nodes, so you will not have them all in hand at level 10 — priority is real. If you are short, how to get more Technology Points and Ancient Points covers the manuals and statues that top you up.
| Technology 10 node | Cost | Build cost | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 20 Wood · 40 Stone · 3 Flame Organ | Take it first — no ingots without it | |
| 1 | 1 Ingot each | High — feeds later furniture and structures | |
| 1 | 10 Wood | Medium — cheap point, situational piece | |
| 1 Ancient | 30 Stone · 10 Paldium Fragment · 5 Cloth · 2 Ancient Civilization Parts | High — separate Ancient Point pool, so it costs you nothing here | |
| 2 | 10 Fiber · 1 Leather | Low — an early armour stopgap | |
| Three Shot Bow | 2 | — | Medium — a real damage jump if you are on bows |
| 1 | 5 Ingot | Low — niche defence | |
| Antique Storage Set | 1 | 155 Wood · 23 Ingot · 7 Nail total | Low — five storage pieces, cosmetic |
Ladder Materials: 10 Wood
One material, no sub-recipe, no crafting station — you place it straight from the build menu like a wall. Ten Wood is roughly one and a half trees, which makes the sticker price irrelevant in practice; the reason to care is that Wood at this stage of the run is also your beds, your chests, your
Palbox and your entire first house, so ladders compete with everything. If you are placing more than two or three, get a Logging Site down first — it unlocks back at Technology 7 for 50 Wood, 20 Stone and 10 Paldium Fragment, and it pays that back in an afternoon.
| Material | Qty | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 4,654 lumber nodes across Palpagos, or any Lumbering Pal on your base | |
| Raw value | 120 gold | 12 gold a log |
| Station needed | None | Placed directly from the Foundations tab |
| Also converts to | 1 Wood → 2 Fiber, so never sell logs for fiber money |
Where to Get Wood Fast
Wood is the least scarce material in the game — 4,654 lumber nodes are spread across the islands and every one regrows after you fell it, so opening the interactive map on the Lumber layer is only useful for spotting a dense stand next to your base, never for finding trees at all. That is actually the practical use: if you are still picking a spot, count the pins before you plant the Palbox, because a base with twenty nodes inside its radius never runs dry. Best base locations in Palworld 1.0 ranks the sites by exactly this. Chopping by hand with a stone axe works fine for a single ladder; anything past that, let a Pal do it.
Best Lumbering Pals for the Job
63 Pals have Lumbering, and the suitability level caps at 8. The split that matters is early versus late: Lifmunk and Tanzee both cover Lumbering at level 1 and both are catchable in your first hour, which is all you need for ten Wood. Eikthyrdeer at level 2 is the first genuine upgrade and doubles as an early mount, so it is the one most players should be chasing while they are still at Technology 10. The level 6-8 Pals below are what you graduate to once you are building in Hardwood rather than Wood, and Celesdir Noct is the only Pal in the game at Lumbering 8. Full rankings live in best Pals for Lumbering: ranks, spawns and base setup.
| Pal | Lumbering | Element | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
Celesdir Noct | 8 | Dark | The single highest Lumbering rating in the game — endgame catch |
Celesdir | 7 | Neutral | The day-shift version, one rank down and far easier to get |
Hartalis | 7 | Neutral | Legendary-rarity, tied for second and a strong mount besides |
Bastigor | 6 | Ice | Best of the mid-tier and doubles up on other base jobs |
Eikthyrdeer | 2 | Neutral | The realistic early pick — mount plus logger in one slot |
Robinquill | 2 | Grass | Grasslands catch, also handles Planting and Handiwork |
Lifmunk | 1 | Grass | Available in the first hour — enough for a ladder or ten |
Tanzee | 1 | Grass | Same tier as Lifmunk, equally common early |
Ladder vs Wooden Stairs: Which to Build
On raw cost this is not close. Wooden Stairs unlock eight technology levels earlier, cost 2 Wood against the Ladder's 10, and let your Pals walk up them — which is the whole argument, because base workers path across stairs and do not climb ladders. If a floor needs to be reachable by the Pals doing your crafting, hauling and cooking, it needs stairs, and no amount of ladder placement fixes it. What the Ladder buys instead is footprint: stairs need a horizontal run to climb, a ladder needs a wall. In a tight tower, a cliffside build, or any structure where the floor below is already full of workbenches, that difference is worth 8 extra Wood. Build stairs as your main route and ladders as the shortcuts.
| Piece | Tech level | Build cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 Wood | Vertical shortcuts where there is no room for a stair run | |
| 2 | 2 Wood | Your main route between floors — Pals can use these | |
| 2 | 2 Wood | The floor the stairs land on | |
| 2 | 2 Wood | Holding an upper storey up over open ground | |
| 2 | 3 Wood | Railing so nothing walks off the edge you just built | |
| 8 | 10 Wood | Blocking raiders — a different tab and a different job |
Where a Ladder Actually Earns Its Ten Wood
The clearest case is a watchtower or lookout — a single pillar stack with a platform on top, where a stair run would need three times the floor area you have. The second is a base built into a slope, where the ground drops away and stairs would end in mid-air; a ladder pinned to the wall handles the gap without any extra foundation underneath it. The third is any interior you have already filled: once a ground floor is wall-to-wall furnaces, chests and a
Logging Site, carving out a stairwell means tearing something down, and a ladder does not. What it is not good for is anything your Pals need to reach — that is a hard limit, not a preference, and it is the reason ladders stay a shortcut rather than a design.
Ladder vs Grappling Gun and Gliders
If the height you are trying to beat is out in the world rather than inside your base, the Ladder is the wrong tool entirely — it is a placeable structure, so it only works inside a base's build radius. Two technology levels past the Ladder, the Grappling Gun handles cliffs anywhere on the map, and it costs an Ancient Technology Point rather than a standard one, which means it does not compete with the Ladder for the same currency at all. Gliders cover the way back down. The realistic answer for most players is all three: stairs inside the base, a ladder for the tower, a grapple for everything outside the fence.
| Option | Tech level | Cost | Works | What it solves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1 point · 10 Wood | Inside a base only | Climbing a storey with no floor space to spare | |
| 12 | 1 Ancient Point · 10 Paldium Fragment · 10 Ingot · 30 Fiber · 1 Ancient Civilization Parts | Anywhere | Cliffs, ledges and vertical travel in the open world | |
| 18 | 2 points | Anywhere | Getting back down without the fall damage | |
| 2 | Shared node · 2 Wood | Inside a base only | The route your Pals use between floors |
The Short Version
Reach player level 10, spend one Technology Point on the Ladder node, and build it from 10 Wood in the Foundations tab. There is no schematic, no upgraded version and no station involved. Take the
Primitive Furnace first if your points are tight, because it gates your entire metal economy and the Ladder does not gate anything. And remember the one restriction that decides where it goes: your Pals will not climb it, so anywhere a worker needs to reach still wants Wooden Stairs.
