It comes from two places: 271 nodes scattered across the Palpagos Islands, and two Pals that drop it every single time. No chest luck, no lottery — just knowing where to look.
Where the Nightstar Sand Nodes Are
The fastest supply is mining rather than hunting. 271 Nightstar Sand nodes sit across the Palpagos Islands, and like every ore node they grow back a while after you break one — so a dense pocket is worth remembering and looping rather than wandering between single rocks. Switch the Nightstar Sand layer on with the interactive map and you can plan a circuit before you leave base, which matters here because the sand sits in the harsher desert stretches where a wrong turn costs real time.
The Two Pals That Drop It
If you would rather fight than mine, exactly two Pals carry the sand and both hand over 1–2 every time — there is no drop-rate gamble to lose. Starryon Primo is the convenient one because it roams around the clock, while Wistella only appears after dark. Catching rather than killing pays the same, so a capture run doubles as a farming run.

Nightstar Sand is effectively the movement-tech currency — nearly everything it builds is boots, dashes, and jumps, topping out at 60 sand for the Air Walker EX. The two non-movement entries are worth flagging: the Metal Detector at 20 sand pays for itself in found loot, and the Beam Sword is one of the best melee crafts in the game at the same price.
