Best Pals for Lumbering: Ranks, Spawns, and Base Setup — Palworld Database

Lumbering is the job that feeds Wood and Hardwood into your base, and only 63 of the game's 288 Pals can do it at all. This guide ranks every one that matters, gives the exact spawn counts and alpha levels for each, covers the partner skills that speed up your own axe, and shows how to staff a Logging Site so the wood keeps coming while you're offline.

Lumbering at a Glance

Lumbering is a mid-sized bench: 63 Pals have it, which puts it behind Transporting (140), Handiwork (109) and Gathering (109) but ahead of every other job. The catch is how top-heavy the ladder is — exactly one Pal reaches rank 8, two reach rank 7, and five reach rank 6, so 55 of the 63 are rank 5 or worse. Wood is also the most-used building material in the game, so this is not a job you can leave understaffed: 142 of the 480 base structures ask for Wood and another 49 ask for Hardwood.

Best Lumbering Pals in Palworld

Eight Pals sit at Lumbering 6 or better, and the honest answer for most players is the second row rather than the first. Celesdir Noct owns the ceiling but exists as a single level 79 alpha, while its base form Celesdir is one rank down and turns up at 1,613 spawn points — feed that one an Applied Lumbering Handbook I and you match the ceiling with a Pal you caught in an afternoon. Watch the food column too: the rank 6+ tier is full of large Pals that eat 8 or 9 per meal, which is a real drain on a base that also runs a Ranch and a Feed Box.

Celesdir Noct — the Only Lumbering 8 Pal

Celesdir Noct is the entire top of the ladder by itself, and it is genuinely awkward to obtain: zero field spawn points, one level 79 alpha encounter, and a breeding line that needs Celesdir paired with Kitsun Noct. Once it's yours it's a clean specialist — Lumbering 8 with only Gathering 4 attached, so it won't wander off to a different station mid-cycle. Its partner skill has nothing to do with wood at all (Blessing of Chaos adds 40% to 80% Ranged Attack depending on partner skill level), so this is a base Pal you assign and forget rather than one you carry. Three of them on a Logging Site II is the fastest Hardwood setup in the game.

Celesdir — Rank 7 at 1,613 Spawn Points

This is the pick for almost everyone. Celesdir is one of the most common Pals on the map at 1,613 spawn points, it spawns day or night, and it arrives at Lumbering 7 — one rank below the game's best, and better than anything else you can farm casually. There's also a level 65 alpha if you want a high-level body to condense. Because a handbook adds +1 permanently, a caught Celesdir plus one Applied Lumbering Handbook I is functionally the rank 8 worker without ever fighting the level 79 alpha; the handbook guide covers where those books come from.

Bastigor — Lumbering 6 and Cooling 8 on One Body

Bastigor is the best two-job pick in the tier. Lumbering 6 is strong on its own, but Cooling 8 is the actual ceiling of the Cooling ladder, so one worker slot covers your logging site and every refrigerator and cooler in the base. Mining 5 rides along on top. It's catchable at 69 spawn points with no alpha needed, which makes it far less of a project than the legendaries below it. The one cost is appetite: 9 food per meal is the joint-highest in this tier, so pair it with a working Ranch before you commit the slot.

Cryolinx Terra — Four Jobs and the Easiest Rank 6 to Farm

Cryolinx Terra spreads 17 work points across four jobs — Lumbering 6, Mining 5, Transporting 4, Handiwork 2 — which is the widest coverage anywhere in the rank 6 group. It's also the most available: 156 spawn points concentrated in the Deserted Ash Plateau (87 of them) and Oilfield Overlook (60), plus a level 62 alpha and a boss appearance in Feybreak Cavern. At 7 food it eats less than every other rank 6 Lumbering Pal. If you're staffing one base rather than five, this is the body that saves you the most slots. Breeding works too — Cryolinx × Dazemu produces it.

Silvegis, Paladius, and Necromus — the Locked Rank 6 Trio

All three are alpha-or-nothing. Silvegis is a level 62 alpha with Lumbering 6 and literally no second job, which makes it a pure logging body — fine if you have one, not worth hunting for. Paladius (level 60 alpha) and Necromus each pair Lumbering 6 with Mining 6, and both are rarity 20 legendaries that only breed true from a pair of themselves. They're excellent workers, but every one of them is a combat trophy first; putting a legendary on a logging site while Celesdir sits in your box at rank 7 is backwards. The alpha hunting guide has the route if you want them anyway.

Best Early and Mid-Game Lumbering Pals

Before level 60 you're picking from ranks 4 and 5, and here availability beats raw rank. Bushi Noct is the standout — Lumbering 5 at 1,990 spawn points and only 5 food, so you can staff an entire logging operation with a species you trip over. Dinossom Lux and Fenglope Lux are the other two you should not overlook: both are Lumbering 4 with real electricity ranks attached, so one catch covers wood and keeps your Power Generator running. If you want double duty instead, Dualith carries Mining 6 and Transporting 6 on the same body as its Lumbering 5, which is three jobs in one slot — it just eats 8 food and takes an XL footprint to do it.

Best Pals for Chopping Trees Yourself

Base workers and axe partners are two different lists, and the second one is much shorter — only four Pals carry a partner skill that touches your own logging at all. Eikthyrdeer and both Mammorest forms share the biggest one, a Logging bonus that runs from +220% at partner skill level 1 up to +500% at level 5, which is the difference between three swings on a tree and one. All three are rideable, so you chop, mount, and carry the load without swapping Pals. Gumoss is the odd entry: it has no Lumbering suitability whatsoever and can't work a logging site, but its partner skill still gives +30% to +50% Logging alongside 40% to 60% item weight reduction, which is genuinely useful on a long harvesting trip.

GumossLogging Assistance+30% → +50% (plus 40% → 60% weight reduction)NoneNot rideable

Eikthyrdeer is the one to grab first. It appears at 227 spawn points, its saddle unlocks at tech level 12, and it eats only 2 food — the lowest of any Pal on this page — so it costs you almost nothing to keep around. The Mammorest pair hit the same logging ceiling and add a monstrous Mining multiplier on top, but both are XL and their saddles land much later, so they're the upgrade rather than the starting point.

Eikthyrdeer Terra Gives Your Whole Base +1 Lumbering

This is the single most overlooked trick in the job. Eikthyrdeer Terra trades the huge axe multiplier for a different effect entirely — while it is stationed at a base, every other base Pal's Lumbering suitability level goes up by 1. Put it down alongside three Celesdir and each of them works as a rank 8, which is the same result as three handbooks for the price of one capture. The catch is scarcity: Eikthyrdeer Terra has just 12 spawn points, so it's a hunt. It also eats 2 food like its base form, so once it's placed it costs you almost nothing to keep the buff running.

How to Set Up a Wood Base

The whole pipeline is three buildings, and the third one is the one people miss. A Logging Site at tech level 7 produces Wood and takes any Pal with Lumbering Lv. 1 or better, so it goes up almost immediately. The Stump and Axe at level 28 is a flat logging-speed boost for the whole base and costs nothing to run — the game states plainly that placing a second one does nothing, so build exactly one. Logging Site II at level 43 is the Hardwood version, and it's an Ancient node paid for in Ancient Technology Points rather than regular ones.

CrusherLv. 8 · 2 points50 Wood, 20 Stone, 10 Paldium FragmentConverts Wood and Stone into other materials — needs Watering, not Lumbering

One trap worth naming: the Crusher sits in the same production tab and consumes wood, but it runs on Watering suitability, so a base full of Lumbering Pals will leave it idle. Check the best Watering Pals list if yours is stalled. For the crafted tiers, Wooden Board unlocks at level 15 and High Quality Wooden Board at level 43, both at a workbench rather than the logging site.

Passives and Implants That Speed Up Lumbering

Two separate stacks apply here and people mix them up. Logging Yield Up passives raise how much wood drops per tree, topping out at +200% on Lv. 5 — that's the one you want on the Pal you actually ride out to chop with. Work-speed passives like Remarkable Craftsmanship and Artisan raise how fast a Pal completes any station cycle, so they're what you breed onto your base logging crew. Getting a rank 4 yield passive and a rank 4 work-speed passive onto the same Pal is the real endgame; the min-max guide covers the breeding side of that.

TipThe cheapest rank 8 logging crew in the game isn't Celesdir Noct at all — it's three Celesdir at rank 7 with one Eikthyrdeer Terra parked in the same base for its +1 Lumbering aura. Celesdir sits at 1,613 spawn points, so the only hard part is finding the 12 spots where Eikthyrdeer Terra appears.

Wood touches almost every other system in the game, so these are the pages that pick up where this one stops:
