SMG
Weapon · WeaponAssaultRifle4★Puts rounds out at a blistering rate, stays manageable to control, and does its best work in close quarters.
SMG is an early assault rifle: 59th of 70 by attack, so treat it as a stepping stone, at 227 against the 15,000 of Charge Rifle.
Nothing is crafted from it — it is an end product, so anything you make is meant to be used rather than banked as a component.
Details
At 15 weight each it eats carry capacity fast, so bring a mount or park a chest nearby. At 63,550 gold it is worth real money to a merchant.
SMG Crafting Recipe
Crafting it takes 66 materials across 3 types, and the bottleneck is almost always the 50× requirement — line that up first and the rest follows.
Where to Find SMG
The recipe is not on the Technology tree — it is locked behind a schematic you have to find first. The best single source is crates on the large oil rig at 1.5% per container, and the table below lists every tier and where each one drops.
Every Tier of SMG
The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: attack runs 130 to 227, a 1.7x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.
Ammunition SMG Uses
SMG fires Handgun Ammo, and nothing else — running dry mid-fight is the usual way this weapon lets you down, so keep the recipe unlocked before you rely on it.
| Ammo | Yield | Craft cost |
|---|---|---|
| ×20 | Ingot ×1, Gunpowder ×1 |
Schematics That Unlock SMG
The Technology tree hands you the plain SMG at level 37 for 3 Technology points, but nothing above that base version — the rarer builds are schematic-only. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.
Fastest route. Two routes to the top-tier SMG schematic, and they are not measured in the same thing: about 33 kills hunting it directly from beakon (alpha), or roughly 84 containers farming the 3★ copy from sea base enemy camp boss stashes in the Mount Obsidian and fusing five. Which is faster depends on how long one of each takes you. Schematics fuse five-to-one, so a lower tier with better odds can beat the top tier outright. Counts are containers of that source, not time.
| Schematic | Rarity | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 4★ | Crates on the large oil rig, Mount Obsidian sea base camp stashes, Treasure map digs (tier 1) +8 more — best 1.5% (grade 3/4/5/6) · Supply drops in the Forest (0.04%) · Beakon (3%) |
Alternatives and Upgrades
Makeshift Assault Rifle sits just above it at 229 attack — only 2 more, close enough that it is a sidegrade rather than an upgrade. The next real step is Makeshift Assault Rifle at 255; below it is Makeshift Assault Rifle at 204.
