Makeshift SMG
Weapon · WeaponAssaultRifle4★Submachine gun thrown together from scrap — quick on the trigger, weak per bullet.
Makeshift SMG is an early assault rifle: 62nd of 70 by attack, so treat it as a stepping stone, at 175 against the 15,000 of Charge Rifle.
Nothing is crafted from it — it is an end product, so anything you make is meant to be used rather than banked as a component.
Details
At 15 weight each it eats carry capacity fast, so bring a mount or park a chest nearby. At 33,220 gold it is worth real money to a merchant.

Where to Find Makeshift SMG
The recipe is not on the Technology tree — it is locked behind a schematic you have to find first. The best single source is treasure map digs (tier 1) at 0.5% per container, and the table below lists every tier and where each one drops.
Using Makeshift SMG Well
The bench this is built at is the plain Weapon Workbench, unlocked at level 20 for 15 Ingot, 10 Wooden Board and 10 Nail, and it draws no power at all — you can raise it before you own a generator. That matters because the Technology tree does not hand over the ordinary Makeshift SMG until 26, so an early schematic skips straight to the 175-attack version six levels before you could research the 100-attack one. Ammunition keeps pace: Coarse Ammo is one Technology point at level 21 and turns 1 Ingot plus 1 Gunpowder into 20 rounds, so bench, gun and feed all close by 21 — the Legendary Assault Rifle by contrast cannot be fed until its ammo research at 45. The schematic has to be on your person when you walk up to the bench; a copy left in a base chest never adds the recipe to the menu.
Work is 1,440,000 against 45,000 for the base gun — thirty-two times the labour, doubling at every rarity step — and only the Handiwork ranks of the Pals you assign move that number, so load the bench before you queue the craft rather than after. If a Legendary Makeshift Assault Rifle schematic shows up alongside it, treat that as a second build and not a replacement. It shares the same Coarse Ammo and the same 2 Ancient Civilization Parts, but asks double the Ingot, High Quality Pal Oil and Fiber, runs about one and a half times the work, sits at level 31 on the tree, and trades the 32-round magazine down to 23 for its 297 attack. It is also the scarcer find — tier 1 digs give it up at 0.26% against this gun's 0.51%.
113 Legendary schematics exist and 22 of them come off a boss kill. This is not one: no Alpha, no tower boss and no raid pays out any rung of the Makeshift SMG ladder, so there is no target you can reset and grind. Every copy has to come out of a container, and every container that holds one sits in the starting half of the map — Grasslands and Forest chests, fishing in either region, enemy camp loot in the Forest and Mount Obsidian, Forest supply drops, and tier 1 treasure map digs.
Five of one tier fuse into the next at the drafting table, so ranking those pools means pricing all four rungs in Legendary terms and adding them up. Per hundred rolls that comes to roughly 0.89 Legendary-equivalents from tier 1 treasure map digs, 0.51 from enemy camp loot in the Forest or Mount Obsidian, 0.28 from Forest supply drops, 0.20 from Forest chests and fishing, and 0.12 from the Grasslands pools. Digging maps is worth about four times as much opening as a Forest chest, and the maps are shaped differently as well: they carry Schematic 2, 3 and 4 at 3.21%, 1.28% and 0.51% and skip Schematic 1 altogether — a step of two and a half between rungs where every other pool falls by roughly five. The tier you actually want is penalised least exactly where the odds are best.
Every Tier of Makeshift SMG
The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: attack runs 100 to 175, a 1.8x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.
| Rarity | Item | Attack | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0★ | Makeshift SMG | 100 | 1000 |
| 1★ | Makeshift SMG | 120 | 1500 |
| 2★ | Makeshift SMG | 135 | 2000 |
| 3★ | Makeshift SMG | 150 | 3000 |
| 4★ | Makeshift SMG (this one) | 175 | 4000 |
Ammunition Makeshift SMG Uses
Makeshift SMG fires Coarse Ammo, and nothing else — running dry mid-fight is the usual way this weapon lets you down, so keep the recipe unlocked before you rely on it.
| Ammo | Yield | Craft cost |
|---|---|---|
| ×20 | Ingot ×1, Gunpowder ×1 |
Schematics That Unlock Makeshift SMG
The Technology tree hands you the plain Makeshift SMG at level 26 for 3 Technology points, but nothing above that base version — the rarer builds are schematic-only. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.
Fastest route. The fastest route is treasure map digs (tier 1), and the reason is the ladder rather than the top rung: that pool stocks every tier, so the common copies it hands you fuse upward into the one you want. Counting them, a top-tier Makeshift SMG schematic works out at roughly 111 containers against the 195 the 4★ drop rate alone suggests. Spare low tiers are progress, not clutter. Schematics fuse five-to-one, so a lower tier with better odds can beat the top tier outright. Counts are containers of that source, not time.
| Schematic | Rarity | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 4★ | Treasure map digs (tier 1), Forest camp loot, Mount Obsidian camp loot +4 more — best 0.5% (grade 3/4/5) · Supply drops in the Forest (0.07%) |
Alternatives and Upgrades
Step up from here and you get SMG at 195 attack; step down and it is SMG at 175. That gap is the honest measure of whether an upgrade is worth the materials right now.
