Makeshift Assault Rifle
Weapon · WeaponAssaultRifle4★Assault rifle cobbled together from scrap. Individual rounds hit soft, but it reaches far and empties fast.
Makeshift Assault Rifle is an early assault rifle: 56th of 70 by attack, so treat it as a stepping stone, at 297 against the 15,000 of Charge Rifle.
It feeds no other recipe, which makes it a terminal item: craft what you will actually carry and stop there.
Details
At 15 weight each it eats carry capacity fast, so bring a mount or park a chest nearby. At 58,270 gold it is worth real money to a merchant.

Where to Find Makeshift Assault Rifle
The recipe is not on the Technology tree — it is locked behind a schematic you have to find first. The best single source is treasure map digs (tier 1) at 0.3% per container, and the table below lists every tier and where each one drops.
Using Makeshift Assault Rifle Well
It feeds on [[item:RoughBullet]], and that is the whole argument for carrying it. Coarse Ammo sits at level 21 in the tree for a single Technology point — ten levels below the Makeshift Assault Rifle's own entry at 31 — and one Ingot plus one Gunpowder yields 20 rounds, or 40 gold each from the Caravan, Desert, Dungeon, Volcano and Wander shops. The tree's proper [[item:AssaultRifle_Default1]] runs on [[item:AssaultRifleBullet]], which is a separate level 45 unlock at 90 gold a round. Bought outright, filling this rifle's 23-round magazine costs 920 gold against 1,800 for the real rifle's 20-round load, so the Legendary Makeshift is the gun you can actually fire on patrol rather than save for boss rooms.
The level 31 tree entry costs 2 Technology points and only ever gives you the 170-attack base gun; this Legendary is unlocked by holding [[item:Blueprint_MakeshiftAssaultRifle_5]] in your own inventory, so it carries no level requirement of its own beyond reaching a weapon bench. At 297 attack, a 23-round magazine and 6,000 durability it lands just under the level 45 Assault Rifle's 320 attack while beating it on magazine (23 vs 20) and doubling its durability (6,000 vs 3,000) — fourteen levels early, on ammo that costs less than half as much. The bill is time: work value 2,240,000 against 70,000 for the base rifle, 32 times the queue. Stack the bench with high-rank Handiwork Pals before you start; surplus materials do nothing to shorten it.
The Schematic 4 is a lottery drop and the pools are not equal. Per roll of the slot it shows at 0.256% in tier 1 treasure map digs, 0.195% in Mount Obsidian enemy camp loot and again in the sea base camps there, 0.077% in Forest chests (Mountain Stream Grotto included) and Forest fishing, and 0.063% in Desert and Forest enemy camp boss stashes — so Mount Obsidian camps are worth roughly two and a half times a Forest chest for the same amount of opening. Fusing is a wash rather than a shortcut: the lower tiers appear at 9.465%, 1.926% and 0.387% in Forest chests, almost exactly five times apart at each step, which is the same five-to-one the drafting table charges to promote them. Collect the low tiers as you go and fuse them up, but choose the richer pool if you are farming on purpose.
Every Tier of Makeshift Assault Rifle
The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: attack runs 170 to 297, a 1.7x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.

Ammunition Makeshift Assault Rifle Uses
Makeshift Assault Rifle fires Coarse Ammo, and nothing else — running dry mid-fight is the usual way this weapon lets you down, so keep the recipe unlocked before you rely on it.
| Ammo | Yield | Craft cost |
|---|---|---|
| ×20 | Ingot ×1, Gunpowder ×1 |
Schematics That Unlock Makeshift Assault Rifle
The Technology tree hands you the plain Makeshift Assault Rifle at level 31 for 2 Technology points, but nothing above that base version — the rarer builds are schematic-only. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.
Fastest route. The fastest route is enemy camp loot in the Mount Obsidian, and the reason is the ladder rather than the top rung: that pool stocks every tier, so the common copies it hands you fuse upward into the one you want. Counting them, a top-tier Makeshift Assault Rifle schematic works out at roughly 128 containers against the 391 the 4★ drop rate alone suggests. Spare low tiers are progress, not clutter. Schematics fuse five-to-one, so a lower tier with better odds can beat the top tier outright. Counts are containers of that source, not time.

Alternatives and Upgrades
Vortex Beater sits just above it at 300 attack — only 3 more, close enough that it is a sidegrade rather than an upgrade. The next real step is Assault Rifle at 320; below it is Makeshift Assault Rifle at 255.
