Where to Find Katana
The recipe is not on the Technology tree — it is locked behind a schematic you have to find first. The best single source is treasure map digs (tier 2) at 1.0% per container, and the table below lists every tier and where each one drops.
The gate on a Legendary Katana is the schematic, and the tier 2 treasure map dig is its best container — but the map is not something you wait to stumble on. The boss stash at the Grasslands sea base camp always pays a map, tier 2 on 80% of clears and tier 3 on the other 20%, which turns the whole route into a Grasslands-level errand for a weapon you will not craft for another forty levels. Land camp bosses hand out tier 2 maps too, at 37.5% in the Desert, 35% on Mount Obsidian, 30% in the Snowfields, 15% in the Forest and 10% in the Grasslands, and a Desert dungeon technology-book stand pays 10.101%. Counting only the dig it leads to, one Grasslands sea base clear is worth about 1.4% of a finished Legendary — near enough 70 clears — and it is by a wide margin the lowest-level route in the family.
Read as bare Legendary hits a dig looks like a 1-in-97 job, which undersells it: the same slot pays the Epic copy at 2.564% and the Rare at 6.410%, and five of either fuses into the grade above. Valued that way a single dig is worth roughly 1.8% of a finished Legendary, about 56 digs, ahead of every other container the family appears in — the Desert sea base boss stash at 1.511% a clear, Sakurajima treasure chests at 0.531%, Snowfields camp stashes at 0.457%. The dig pool climbs 2.5 to 1 instead of the usual 5 to 1 and never pays the Uncommon grade, so the direct Legendary line is still most of what a dig is worth. No dig is wasted either: the schematic slot fires every time from a pool of 30 entries across ten gear families, so one dig in ten is some grade of Katana, and the map also gives 5 Potions on every dig, a work suitability ticket on 70% of them and a stat fruit on 20%.

The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: attack runs 780 to 1170, a 1.5x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.
Schematics That Unlock Katana
The Technology tree hands you the plain Katana at level 44 for 2 Technology points, but nothing above that base version — the rarer builds are schematic-only. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.
Fastest route. The fastest route is treasure map digs (tier 2), and the reason is the ladder rather than the top rung: that pool stocks every tier, so the common copies it hands you fuse upward into the one you want. Counting them, a top-tier Katana schematic works out at roughly 56 containers against the 97 the 4★ drop rate alone suggests. Spare low tiers are progress, not clutter. Schematics fuse five-to-one, so a lower tier with better odds can beat the top tier outright. Counts are containers of that source, not time.
